Gathering Water by Regan Claire

“Della Doe Deare isn’t like most people. Most people begin their life on the day they enter the world; the day they’re born. Della, well, hers began on the day she turned eighteen. After all, it was the day she first heard her real name, and that of her mother. With nothing but a couple of duffel bags and a folder full of questions, she travels to coastal North Carolina to claim a house that she inherited from a grandmother she never knew.”
She has two goals: discover why her mother ran away from home all those years ago, and avoid the family that had left her to rot in an inept foster care system. Hard to do when the family she’s been trying to avoid is dragging her into an unimaginable world… a world on the brink of war, and both sides want her dead.
All Della ever wanted was to know who she was, but her journey to self-discovery might just lead to destruction.
*I received this Ebook in exchange for an honest review. This has not influenced my opinion in any way*
Gathering Water was without a doubt, the best book which I have had to read as part of a book tour so far. I was immediately drawn in by Della and her escape of the foster system on her 18th birthday. I went into the book blind as I often do because it’s so much more fun that way, I was intrigued int he story before I realized the fantasy element because that’s not the only thing going on with the characters in the plot. In her search for her identity, Della unwillingly has family thrust upon her making for an exuberant cast of characters.
5 Reasons You Are Going to LOVE Gathering Water
  1. Della is a really relate able character and her narrative is easy to follow as well as peppered with details about her life so that by the end of the book, you really know her.
  2. Cash, Della’s cousin is HILARIOUS! Everything will get all serious and the tension will be broken by a remark from Cash and you’ll be caught off guard laughing, I literally fell off my bed laughing.
  3. Regan Claire has managed to get the perfect ratio of plot and setting because while I felt well-informed about where the characters were and what it all looked like, I was never bored of reading descriptions of places, which is awesome and kept the fast pace of the novel.
  4. I’m not telling you what it is because it will ruin the surprise, but the fantastical element (*ba dum tss to those of you who have read it, I know, I’m terrible, it’s not that punny!!) is really intriguing and unique. At first I was really confused but upon comprehension I was astounded, it’s soooooo cool!!
  5. The fight scenes in this book are HARD CORE! Trying to picture it all in my head gave me a headache (in a good way) because it all happens so quickly!

How I Pictured the Characters

As per usual, I couldn’t get a picture of Della in my mind because I was seeing things from her eyes, however I did manage to capture the boys and Luke.

A Tidewater girl born and bred, Regan Claire’s first friend and love was the Atlantic. Growing up being told the legends about Pirates and American Natives common in coastal VA and NC, coupled with being an only child, did wonders for her imagination; Regan had one foot in fantasy-land ever since, a trait her dear husband heroically endures (and one she secretly hopes her daughters have inherited). Her family moved inland to Nashville while she was entering tweenhood and not a day went by that she didn’t miss her childhood playmate and her crashing waves. Nashville has her perks though, namely the love of Regan’s life and their two sweet girls. Their insane mutt-dog and the stray cat that refuses to leave their porch aren’t too bad either. Regan loves fairytales A LOT, teen movies (preferably with dancing or singing), reads entirely too much, and is constantly late.
