Dorothy Must Die by Danielle Paige
“I didn’t ask for any of this. I didn’t ask to be some kind of hero.
But when your whole life gets swept up by a tornado—taking you with it—you have no choice but to go along, you know?
Sure, I’ve read the books. I’ve seen the movies. I know the song about the rainbow and the happy little blue birds. But I never expected Oz to look like this. To be a place where Good Witches can’t be trusted, Wicked Witches may just be the good guys, and winged monkeys can be executed for acts of rebellion. There’s still the yellow brick road, though—but even that’s crumbling.
Dorothy. They say she found a way to come back to Oz. They say she seized power and the power went to her head. And now no one is safe.
My name is Amy Gumm—and I’m the other girl from Kansas.
I’ve been recruited by the Revolutionary Order of the Wicked.
I’ve been trained to fight.
And I have a mission:
Remove the Tin Woodman’s heart.
Steal the Scarecrow’s brain.
Take the Lion’s courage.
Then and only then—Dorothy must die!”
If you haven’t read Dorothy Must Die yet, you NEED to read it! This version of Oz is so drastically different from the one we all know and love but you can still see traces of old Oz shining through. Amy is a great protagonist who will lead you into this new world perfectly and hey who needs Toto when you have Star (Amy’s alcoholic mother’s rat).
Why I read it
Dorothy is a role I really have a connection with as I have portrayed her in both The Wizard of Oz as well as The Wiz and I LOVE Wicked so the idea of an Oz spin-off was like EHRMAGERD I NEED TO READ THIS!
How I pictured the characters
Amy Gumm: okay so she has pink hair and I’d just come back from TeenBookCon and Laini Taylor has pink hair… yeah I don’t even
Mombi – I’m not even gonna try to explain this one because I seriously have no clue
Ozma – So to me she looked how Glinda is supposed to be and I ended up with Kristen Chenowith
Glinda – There’s no picture but for some reason in my head she was like a psychotic robot?
Scarecrow – Does anyone else remember this episode of Doctor Who?
Tinman – So picture Edward Scissorhands but evil and with a metal face… there it is
Gert – I pictured Gert as this girl who was in a show with me because she played a character called Gert so yeah
Glamora –This was a character in a movie form when I was younger so picture her with a big ballgown on and you’ve got my mental image haha
This is definitely the most gory and twisted Young Adult Book I have ever read and though I’m not usually a fan, it is written so well that you’ll just need to keep going. So If you haven’t read it yet beware there are spoilers below, don’t say I didn’t warn you!
Theories I had
I had like a million and one crackpot theories reading this book and most of them were ridiculous particularly surrounding Ozma and Pete but none of them were as weird as what actually happened.
I thought that Indigo was Ozma
I thought that Indigo was Ozma’s sister or cousin or something
I refused to believe Ozma was dead
I thought that Pete was the Wizard
I thought that Nox was the Wizard
I KNEW that Ollie would return and I’m so glad he did because he is the coolest!
Assorted other thoughts
I just really loved it! I was like dying in the wardrobe when Jellia dropped the nail polish on the carpet!
I for real thought Dorothy would kill her and I was so gutted when she did die and got turned into that horrible corpse thing I was so shocked and disgusted and sad because she was my favourite character from the nail polish onwards. I really did not see it coming that she was working with the Wicked until she cleared the blood from behind Amy’s ear.
I really loved that they kept the characters from the original Oz in the book. Although I haven’t read it, the Wiz makes references to Kalidahs and things so I was really happy to see them in Amy’s Oz.
The Revolutionary Order of the Wicked was a really interesting concept to have in the book. The idea that all of these Wicked Witches had united against a common evil really spoke measures as to how bad Dorothy was and the terrible affect her rule was having all over Oz.
Is it just me or is permasmile creepy or what? at first I didn’t understand from what it had been described as on Glinda but when we got to see it up close with Jellia I got it. Is it magic or drugs though?
Predictions for the Next Book
I think that in book two, the flying monkey’s are going to be explored in more detail, I really want to see what this force of unwinged revolutionists can do!
There has been no mention of how many books there are going to be so I predict another three, the scarecrow, lion and Dorothy will each be killed in one of the books.
The Wizard is Amy’s ancestor somewhere. I know it’s far-fetched but I’m putting it out there now just in case I’m right.
I STILL think that Indigo will come back
I want to see the bicycle with a head again because that was cool but weird as hell.
Amy is going to come into her powers more and a second love interest will be introduced but she will ultimately choose Nox (who I really like by the way).
Ozma is going to become slightly more normal now that she is no longer clinging to her Pete identity.
Glamora will try to kill Glinda but will be killed by her instead which will make Scarlett very sad 🙁
