Scarlet and Cress by Marissa Meyer DOUBLE REVIEW!

While I was away last week, I read both Scarlet and Cress, books 2 + 3 in the Lunar Chronicles series and can I say that both of them just BLEW.ME.AWAY. I got so invested in the story and so connected to the character and this has earned the Lunar Chronicles it’s place in my mental list of the best books ever.

Meet the characters

Scarlet – Book 2

Scarlet Benoit

Scarlett Benoit is the Little Red Riding Hood of the series except, Riding hood has grown up and lives in a futuristic world of cyborgs, plague and Lunars. Scarlett’s grandmother has gone missing and nobody will believe that crazy Michelle Benoit has been kidnapped opposed to having run away.

Mental picture:

Wolfe

Wolfe is a nervy street-fighter who runs into Scarlet while she is on the hunt for her grandma. He offers her assistance and possible information but as is classic in the fairytale, everything is not as it seems when it comes to him.

Mental Picture:

Carswell Thorne

Cinder as we remember from the last book has been thrown in prision and in her dramatic escape, has picked up a stray. Ladies man “Captain” Carswell Thorne who was imprisoned for the theft of an American Military ship adds a splash of lighthearted humor into the books cocktail of mystery, sci-fi and Romance.

Mental Picture:

Michelle Benoit

Cinder suspects that Michelle Benoit knows information about her paths and is on a mission to find her but if she has already been kidnapped, is Cinder too late?

Mental Picture:

Scarlet was a superb sequel to Cinder, the plot unraveled further, the twisted fairytale world continued to build up around me and there were moments when even though I was reading from a character’s point of view, I couldn’t tell where their loyalties lay and that is a sign of truly great writing. I was staggered by the intense cycle of emotions I felt reading this book and I finished it longing for more, good thing too as I had Cress on hand!

LOOKOUT! CRESS SPOILERS UP AHEAD! IF YOU HAVEN’T READ ALL THREE OF THE BOOKS CURRENTLY OUT : CINDER, SCARLET AND CRESS, THEN I URGE YOU TO READ NO FURTHER! FURTHERMORE I WANT TO POINT OUT IMMEDIATELY THAT THIS IS JUST GOING TO BE A MISH MASH OF PARTIALLY COHERENT THOUGHTS I HAD ABOUT THE BOOKS

Can I just take a moment to open this review with how much I loved Cress as a character? She was every single fangirling teenage introvert on the planet with the exception of the hacking skills. The realism of her character is rivaled only by that of Cath from fangirl and I really love reading that in a character because it makes me feel like my characteristics have been represented. She crushed on Thorne so hard and I can’t even express how heartwarming it was to watch their romance blossom.

Something I especially liked about this book was how different the tone of each character was. I could almost immediatley tell who was narrating because of the different styles of characterisation and when you are working with at least 8 different narrators (Cinder, Scarlet, Cress, Wolfe, Thorne, Kai, Dr Erland and even Iko at one point) that is a staggering ting to manage.

This story was so fast-paced and I loved it! There were 550 pages in this book and not one paragraph felt like it was just there to fill space. Everything was necessary, everything was exciting, everything was enjoyable. I loved it so much that even though I was on holiday I got through it in one day. I was fully immersed in the story, completely drawn in, I can barely express how awesome this book was, there aren’t enough adjectives in the world.
