The Shadowhunter’s Codex is a book which is referenced in both the mortal instruments series and the infernal devices trilogy as a guidebook to becoming a Shadowhunter. It’s main purpose is to educate those planning an ascension to the Clave on the basics of “Shadowhunting”.
BLURB COURTESY OF GOODREADS
The Clave is pleased to announce the newest edition of the Nephilim’s oldest and most famous training manual: the Shadowhunter’s Codex. Since the thirteenth century, the Codex has been the young Shadowhunter’s best friend. When you’re being swarmed by demons it can be easy to forget the finer points of obscure demon languages or the fastest way to stop an attack of Raum demons. With the Codex by your side, you never have to worry.
Now in its twenty-seventh edition, the Codex covers it all: the history and the laws of our world; how to identify, interact with, and if necessary, kill that world’s many colorful denizens; which end of the stele is the end you write with. No more will your attempt to fight off rogue vampires and warlocks be slowed by the need to answer endless questions from your new recruits: What is a Pyxis? Why don’t we use guns? If I can’t see a warlock’s mark, is there a polite way to ask him where it is? Where do we get all our holy water? Geography, History, Magic, and Zoology textbook all rolled into one, the Codex is here to help new Shadowhunters navigate the beautiful, often brutal world that we inhabit…….(click link to see more)
SPOILER FREE REVIEW
The Shadowhunters Codex provides a great insight into the complex shadow world which Cassandra Clare has constructed in her books. Featuring a demonology, a guide to downworlders and some kick-ass drawings by “Clary Fray” herself, the codex lets you explore the world of your favourite characters and hear what they had to say about certain bits in the comments scribbled all over it by Clary, Jace and Simon.
I really enjoyed this companion book to the series as it helped me understand a few things which the series had baffled me with and also quenched my Jace withdrawal symptoms while I wait for City Of Heavenly Fire. While a bit slow-moving at times, I think it was a really enjoyable reading experience and I recommend it to all hard-core TMI/TID/BOTH fans! I would rate it 85% because I loved it but there were a couple of slowish bits and I expected more character comments (though there were heaps!).
MY OPINION AT A GLANCE
Fave Commenter: SIMON! He was beyond hilarious
Fave Part: SIMON FANFICTION!
Least Fave Part: The Void and The Demon City of Pandemonium (it felt slow and unnecessary)
Fave Quote: Codex: Have you ever been marked? Describe the experience here.
Clary: I was marked by a very cute boy with terrible impulse control. I don’t remember because I was basically unconscious but everyone was mad at him when I woke up. The end. Love Clary
Simon: OH MY GOD. Your love is so epic.
If you haven’t already I’m giving you some space to look away
are you ready?
WHAT WAS RIGHT WITH IT
The best thing about this book, hands down was the comments which the three characters left all over the codex. It made it a bit more lighthearted and less fact-based, a little break form all of the intense “educational” world building. Some of the best ones were…
Codex: What is your Shadowhunter name?
Jace: I can’t believe you actually wrote that in.
Simon: Definitely either STORMWALKER or NIGHTRAVEN – what do you think?
Jace: BLOODUCKER fits
Simon: not cool bro.
Another one being
Codex: Discussion Questions and things to try
Simon: SIMON NIGHTRAVEN NEEDS NO DISCUSSION QUESTIONS!
Jace: DO NOT SKIP. Simon is not a textbook-level source on vampires!
Simon: DO NOT SKIP. You must only stroll, mosey or hop
AND MY PERSONAL FAVOURITE!
Codex: What’s your everyday carry? What might you add to it to cover your new Shadowhunter responsibilities?
Clary: Wallet, watch, phone, stele, pencils, sketchbook, waterproof fine tip pen for inking, pencil sharpener, witchlight and mint lip balm
Simon: I hear chapped lips is the leading cause of death in Shadowhunters. My Turn! *lists all the things*
Clary: aaaand lip balm. Don’t even lie, you reek of strawberry right now
Simon: Alas, my secret shame revealed.
Another great thing aboout the codex were the amazing illustrations dotted all over the place. The artwork came from 9 different artists and resulted in some beautiful work which I will post at the end. There was also an introduction written by Magnus Bane as to why people become shadowhunters. This incude reasons such as:
7. You were in the wrong place at the wrong time
12. You have a compound last name already and convinced someone importnt that yours is a a Shadowhunter family and the Shadowhunteriness has just been weakened by generations of poor breeding.
17. Large bearded man on a flying motorcycle appeared to tak you to Shadowhunter School. (Note: presence of flying motorbike suggests bearded man may be a vampire)
I noticed that there are multiple ties between the history of the Shadow World and Greek Mythology (like in PJO) For example the first mention we get is of a weapon called an aegis (like Thalia’s sheild) which is a knife which has been “seethed and tempered in angel blood”. Later on we hear of the “Gorgons of Greece” and in the Demonology, we are told of the Hydra, Hellhounds and more about the Demon Azazel. It says that he used to be an angel but fell into demon status after he taught mankind how to make themselves weapons. This sounds like the story of Prometheus, the God who gave the humans fire.
I NEED TO GET A LIFE BECAUSE I AM NOW SHIPPING CATS! CHURCH AND CHAIRMAN MEOW FTDUBS!
I CANNOT FORGET TO MENTION SIMON’S EPIC FANFICTION WHICH ENDED THE BOOK!
The Great and Tragic Love Of Jonathan Shadowhunter and David The Silent
WHAT WAS WRONG WITH IT
The Clave has some answering to do because I got really cross when it mentioned that for consorting wit demons, a Shadowhunter’s whole family would be punished, stripped of their marks and made mundane and I do not see this as fair because a whole family is not to blame for the mistakes of one of it’s members and should not be treated as such. To add insult to injury, it later tells of how they don’t wish to punish children for the crimes of their parents when it is on the case of Shadowhunters who have left the Clave
NOTE – PLEASE DO NOT CONTINUE IF YOU HAVE NOT COMPLETED THE INFERNAL DEVICES TRILOGY AND READ THE 5 MORTAL INSTRUMENTS BOOKS CURRENTLY OUT
There was also a section of the book dedicated to Demon Pox (which is now an extremely treatable disease) and it it suggested later that the demon which Lightwood turned into was Behemoth. A “formless monstrosity of a demon” which is larger than a human and has “Double rows of teeth lining the length of its body.” it is also stated that “The Behemoth devours everything in it’s path, including people”.
There was a really cool children’s rhyme included in the codex about the traditional colours for special occasions which specifically mentions that brides wear gold. I found this to be interesting bcause wasn;t Clary wearing a gold dress at the end of COFA at Luke and Jocelyn’s engagement party?
Henry Branwell was mentioned multiple times which i thought was really cool! He is stated ast he creator of the first sensor and we are told that his autobiography was called A Whoops and a Bang: The Shadowhunter of the Modern Age, Which I think suits him very well! It is also mentioned that Henry created the first portal with the help of a warlock WHO’S NAME HISTORY, UNFORTUNATELY, DOES NOT RECORD! THOSE ASSHOLES! (I mean the writers of the codex, this was definitely not Henry) THEY FORGOT MAGNUS! I had a big long rage about this to my friend, who didn’t understand.. sigh…..
Something which confused me in the codex was when in the TMI timeline were Clary, Jace and Simon’s comments supposedly written? because it is mentioned that they know Lake Lyn is the mirror, but Jace is still going by Wayland when he found out he was a Herondale in the same book?
This book has given me a lot to think about and i have formed some theories in my mind about City Of Heavenly Fire. Firstly, I think that the Iron sisters are going to play a big part in the story because we learn so much about them here and I think that their time in the story is not finished yet. Especially seeing as the main job of the Iron Sisters is to work int he forges and make weapons made of Adamas and HEAVENLY FIRE!
I am also convinced that seeing as we know 6 named characters are going to die, some of them will be:
- Luke (couple will be separated forever! and he will leave Jocelyn pregnant or Jocelyn might become an Iron Sister after his death because that could count as her dying like with the Jem thing!)
- Izzie (won’t actually die, will become a vampire)
