That’s What He Said Thursday

Description: Post a favorite line from your book boyfriend to his heroine. The quote you choose does not have to be romantic – it can be anything spoken by a book boyfriend

This week dedicated to Joe Morelli from the Stephanie Plum series

Joe: “Next time I fall in love it’s going to be with someone who isn’t an expert in fibbing.”
Steph: “You’re in love with me?”
Joe: “You didn’t know that?”
Steph: “I did, but it’s nice to hear.”
Joe: “Scares the hell out of me.”

“I like the way you’ve let your hair go curly,” he finally said. “Suits your personality. Lots of energy, not much control, sexy as hell,”

“Men drive off bridges and drink too much because of women like you.”

“Honey, a man can’t keep his gun in a cookie jar. It just isn’t done.”

You gotta love him!

Top 10 Bookish Things I am Thankful For

Top Ten Tuesday
Description: Each week has a different theme and you need to list your Top Ten books/items under that theme!

So then in no particular order

1. Harry Potter
Without this series in my life and the fandom to be a part of, I don’t know where I would be. Though I am not old enough to say that I grew up alongside Harry, I can say that he made my childhood brighter and made me who I am today, an avid reader, a potential writer (hopefully) and even to some extent a confidant young woman. So I am truly thankful for J.K Rowling and the magical world she created

2. My bookshelf (and all of the books on it)
My bookshelf is my pride and joy. It is the shrine of tidiness which brightens my whole room. It’s not very big, so I need to rearrange EVERYTHING every time I get a new book, which makes me really happy!

3. Magnetic Bookmarks
They are just so useful! They don’t fall out, they don’t damage your book and you can clip them so that they save the line on the page you are reading
4. My Kindle
Now, I must admit, I was a late convert to the Kindle party. I was skeptical about how different it would be to read electronically and about how it would “ruin the experience” for me but it is a much more convenient way to read when travelling especially with the use of the kindle library. It has made my life so much easier.
5. Christine (polandbananasBOOKS)
So in January of this year when I finished Mark Of Athena I was all alone in a sinking ship of feels from the trauma which that book inflicted on me. I went to youtube and typed in “The Mark of Athena” i had no idea what the holy Hades I hoped to find, a book trailer or something? I don’t know but the first video which popped up was Christine’s review of the book which I watched and found myself in hysterics at what she had to say. From that point on I watched as many of her videos as I could and then made an effort to read the books which she had so that I could watch more. I discovered The Mortal Instruments, Mara Dyer, Delirium and Divergent all thanks to her videos so thanks Christine, it’s been awesome!!
6. Dr Who

7. The Library
So as a person who doesn’t have a fixed amount of money which I can buy books with, the library has always been a great resource for me. When I was younger, I read pretty quickly to the extent that my parent wouldn’t buy me books because it would have been too expensive with the speed that I would have finished it. It also means that I don’t need to buy books that I won’t enjoy because I can just get them at the library for free.

8. My Godmother
My Godma Eve fed my desire to read when I was in primary school because she was responsible for my library card (I wasn’t trusted not to lose it) and I always saw her every week and we would go to the library and I could get all of the books I needed. I have always been really close with her up until I moved to the States and I can’t wait to see her at Christmas!

9. The Bulldog Challenge
So my English teacher said to me “Hey Scarlett, do you think you can read 75 books between Christmas and July?” and I was just like “Challenge Accepted” So I read and read and read and read and just kept on going past July up until now, where I am still going. I have read so many great books this year and am glad I had the chance to read each and every one of them.
10. You guys!
I’m really thankful for you. the people who read this if you are out there. I have had a great time writing this blog and I can’t wait to continue writing. So if you have been reading this since I started or have just popped on to see this post Thanks!

Catching Fire Movie Review

So I went to see Catching Fire yesterday and it was AMAZING!!!
I reread the book just before going so I recognized that most of the dialogue was direct from the book which made me so happy!! Jennifer Lawrence, I swear to god she is flawless and I love her, she did and amazing job at portraying Katniss again which was so wonderful!! Most of the movie takes place outside of the arena as it does in the book which made it a little dull at times but overall it was just fantastic. There was no horrible shaky cam like in The Hunger Games and the CGI was really good quality.

The opening of the movie worked really well because it mirrored the opening of The Hunger Games with Katniss hunting and everything in this movie related  lot more o how I pictured it in my head, it was a really superb adaption! I really enjoyed the role Effie played in the movie compared to the book as I fell like we saw her a lot more in the movie and she wasn’t just annoying like book 1 Effie is. Beetee and Wiress were captured perfectly as was Johanna, who I LOVED! Her interview speech was hilarious and my favourite part of the movie hands down was the elevator scene, particularly Katniss’ face at that point, it was priceless!

I think it was really interesting, the way they decided to depict the forcefield  because it was completely different to how I thought it would be but it looked really cool and emphasized just how fake the games are. Also the lightning tree looked really cool and the evil mist stuff was really freaky, especially the characters reactions to it!

The costumes were fantastic (for the most part) The wedding dress-to-mockingjay was gorgeous and I was so envious of Katniss’ Victory Tour wardrobe, she looked stunning in all of it! ( I think its a Jennifer Lawrence thing!)

So now for the things which I was not so keen on. Finnick. I can’t even. I felt like it was a movie Magnus Bane situation all over again. My main problem with the movie was that I really missed the prep teams. They weren’t in the first movie which really contributed to this but in this one they seemed really snooty and above it all rather than just self-absorbed and naive in a slightly endearing way, like pets. The scene where they get Katniss ready fr the last time and they all need tt leave the room because they are so upset was a really nice part of the book which I sorely missed. The other thing was that I don’t think the movie really highlighted Katniss and Peeta’s relationship. I mean it did but not in the right way. We didn’t get to see Katniss falling for Peeta it was just a case of one second she loves Gale, then she leaves him but is completely indifferent to Peeta and then as soon as they get to the arena, she has an epiphany and realises that yes she actually is madly in love with him, I mean what?

Overall, I really loved the movie! It was a great adaption which was really true to the books and was jam-packed with quotations and epic action scenes. Definitely the best adaption of the year. I loved it!

The Dollhouse Asylum by Mary Gray

“The Elysian fields are nothing but a dark stage, and we are Teo’s marionettes”

A virus that had once been contained has returned, and soon no place will be left untouched by its destruction. But when Cheyenne wakes up in Elysian Fields–a subdivision cut off from the world and its monster-creating virus–she is thrilled to have a chance at survival.

At first, Elysian Fields, with its beautiful houses and manicured lawns, is perfect. Teo Richardson, the older man who stole Cheyenne’s heart, built it so they could be together. But when Teo tells Cheyenne there are tests that she and seven other couples must pass to be worthy of salvation, Cheyenne begins to question the perfection of his world.

The people they were before are gone. Cheyenne is now “Persephone,” and each couple has been re-named to reflect the most tragic romances ever told. Everyone is fighting to pass the test, to remain in Elysian Fields. Teo dresses them up, tells them when to move and how to act, and in order to pass the test, they must play along.

If they play it right, then they’ll be safe.

But if they play it wrong, they’ll die

The Dollhouse Asylum is a beautifully written novel which made me laugh, gasp, scream with rage and cry with everything in between thrown in as well. The protagonist Cheyenne “Persephone” Laurent had some of he most beautiful inner monologue I have read in a long time. What really stood out to me with his book was that the plot was so different from anything else I have read before. there was not one point in the book where I could pick out what would happen next and I am struggling to think of anything I could possibly compare it to. But seriously, you need to read it, put it to the top of your list, I wish I had read it sooner!

Favourite Character: Izzie
Favourite Scene: Persephone’s Party
Least Fave Character: 3 way tie between Sal, Teo and Jonas WHAT ASSHATS!
Funniest Quote: “You know, my brother’s smart, but you’re smart too. Mix that with your conscience and there’s no stopping what you can do!…..I sound like a fricken Dr Seuss book!”
Rating: 85%

are you gone?

ok then!

I really enjoyed the use of the tragic literary couples and disguising their names was a really great idea because the only one immediately obvious was Romeo and Juliet which didn’t give anything away because there were no other clues. It was like a really complex game of Cluedo with Teo at the centre. Though gruesome in part, I had my eyes glued to the pages in others! Can I please just point out how much I love Marcus!! I thought that using him as a way to tie Cheyenne back into the real world was really cool! It really let the reader explore the differences between the two boys and I was shipping him and Cheyenne so hard form the start!! Though, I must say my favourite character hands down was Izzie! She just brought some light to the book and she made me happy, she was really bubbly and positive which I could relate to and she was trying to make the best out of a horrible situation. Also, the way in which each couple had to host a party relating to their theme was really interesting because it allowed m to learn more about the couples which I didn’t already know about.

Now I’m going to take a whole paragraph to discuss Teo’s asshattery and my annoyance that Cheyenne fell for him. From the off I felt a bit weird about the whole situation, he’s her teacher, it’s against the rules la la la. But then, all of that was excused because Cheyenne is a naive schoolgirl but can we just take a moment to think here. The book opens with him kidnapping her. If that isn’t a hint that he’s bad news, I don’t know what is. I mean even setting aside the fact that he killed a bunch of people he is generally just an asshat! He treats Cheyenne like crap and she deserves better, she deserves Marcus!!

Now as I said earlier, Cheyenne had some mesmerisingly beautiful inner monologue and this is my favourite

“The Elysian fields are nothing but a dark stage, and we are Teo’s marionettes. He tips his hand to the right and we jostle out hands and feet; he flicks his and down and we are forced to bow low. We have no choice but to play along because if we don’t, he’ll cut our strings and watch as we crash on the ground, shattering”

Top 10 Books I Would Recommend to people trying to burst their YA Bubble

Top 10 Tuesdays
Description: Each week has a different theme and you need to list your Top Ten books/items under that theme!
So the YA bubble is a thing we are all hopefully aware of. If not please watch this video by Ariel Bissett, it should all become clear to you then:Greek My
So to coax people out of that YA bubble, I have posted here my Top 10 Non-YA books and series
1. Percy Jackson and The Olympians/Heroes of Olympus by Rick Riordan
So if you didn’t already know, it may surprise you to learn that the amazing Percy Jackson books are NOT YA! They are in fact shelved as Middle Grade books but many Adults and Young adults adore them also. These two series are a perfect fusion of  Greek(and occasionally Roman) Mythology, Adventure, witty comebacks and swoon-worthy Percy moments.
2. Stephanie Plum Series by Janet Evanovich
So I have raved about how awesome and hilarious these books are and I have devoured most of the series this year (excluding 19, which I am saving and 20 which comes out tomorrow) these books are definitely adult and they are listed as being Crime novels in the book store but they are comedic crime novels. They follow the always exciting life of Stephanie Plum, a lingerie shop assistant on Macey’s turned kick-ass (or in this case fall-on-her-ass) bounty hunter. Featuring a cast of crazy characters including a stoner she knows from high school and a transvestite singer/school bus driver (not to mention Stephanie’s off-her-rocker Grandma Mazur) the whole series is jam packed full of moments which will get you kicked out of the library for laughing too hard ( yes that actually happened to me…once…maybe twice….possibly three times)
3.Harry Potter
‘Nuff Said
4.The Host
So, a lot of people turn their nose up at this book due to the twilight stigma of it being written by Stephanie Meyer but “The Host” couldn’t be more different from the saga casting it in shadow. It is a really fantastic read which is not YA! I was a little wary going into it seeing as it’s not my usual style but it exceeded my expectations and it is now one of my all time favourite books!
5.Red by Kate Serine
This one was free from amazon for a wee while and someone recommended it to me and i checked it out, it was fantastic!! I’m going to paste the Goodreads thing here to explain it better than I can!
“My name is Tess Little. But everyone calls me Red.”

Once upon a time, a spell went awry, stranding Make Believe characters in the ordinary world. Since then, Tess “Red” Little—a/k/a Little Red Riding Hood—has worked as an Enforcer for the Chicago branch of the Fairytale Management Authority. But, consider yourself warned—she’s not just some waif with a basket of goodies. All grown up and with nothing to lose, a gun and combat boots is more her style. And Red’s new assignment threatens to be short on happily ever afters…

But, consider yourself warned—she’s not just some waif with a basket of goodies. All grown up and with nothing to lose, a gun and combat boots is more her style. And Red’s new assignment threatens to be short on happily ever afters…

Someone is murdering transplanted Tales in gruesome fashion. The list of fictional characters capable of such grisly acts is short and includes more than one of Red’s old flames. And if that wasn’t bad enough, there’s another complication, in the form of sexy, enigmatic Nate Grimm, the FMA’s lead detective and part-time Reaper. Used to following her own rules and living life on the edge, Red has managed to avoid taking on a partner until now. But Nate’s dark side makes him perfect for a case like this. That is, if she can trust him. Because if there’s one thing Red knows for sure, it’s that believing in the wrong person can have big, bad consequences…

6.Pride and Prejudice
So I’m not a huge fan of the classics (as in this is one of the only ones I’ve read and its the only one I enjoyed) but I red this one earlier in the year after discovering the Lizzie Bennett Diaries and I loved it! I was a lot easier for me to read and understand because I had the diaries to reference back to if I got lost or confused!
So I’m only posting 6 because I am really struggling for time right now (see previous post for explanation)

So I am preparing for a maths mock exam on Thursday because it determines whether or not I get to take the exam a year early or not and then there is another one on the following Wednesday. I ma letting you know this so that you know I will not be posting my book memes on time. I am halfway through writing my Top Ten Tuesday post and its one I am really excited about. I finished the Dollhouse Asylum by Mary Gray yesterday so I also need to review that. Hopefully I will be back on track again by Friday, but we’ll see! Sorry!

Weekly Wrap-Up

What I bought this week

I didn’t buy any books this week so there is no stacking the shelves 🙁

What I posted this week

On Monday, I confessed to my annoying habit of giving up on books if I am not interested after 100 pages and I got creative and made up some acrostic author names
On Tuesday, I was mentally redesigning some hideous book covers and I played again with some new names
On Thursday, I was enjoying the hilarious exchanges between Katy and Daemon in the Lux series
On Friday, I finished The Shadowhunter’s Codex and had a rave about how awesome it was!
On Saturday, I quoted about drawing because my sister couldn’t come up with any cooler verbs

Cool Bookish Things I found this Week

So if you watch PolandbananasBOOKS on youtube, you will know about her new merchandise which she is selling at and I bought a BOOKLION shirt which I am eagerly waiting to arrive!!

Description : Each week a theme will be posted. Use your interpretation of the word and find a quote related to it. It can vary in form and does not have to be exact.
I’m putting my own twist on it in that I’m going to post 2-3 and one of them must be funny and/or from a book.
So the blog which host’s this meme is no longer theming it so I am theming my own ones from now on.  This week the theme is DRAWING beacuse I asked my sister for a random verb. I swear my family are useless, my mum said Florence Nightingale. THAT’S NOT EVEN A VERB!
I’m going to begin with my funny quote from City Of Bones. These books are hilarious, there is so much to choose from!

Don’t tell me. You’ve got a drawing emergency. You need a nude model. Well, I’m not in the mood.
– Jace Wayland

I like this one because it’s very quirky!
A drawing is simply a line going for a walk.
-Paul Klee

What is Happening!

So as you may or may not have noticed, I haven’t been reading much. To you this will seem like it’s just a normal thing seeing as this blog has only been up since around the time my consistent reading stopped and the great big reading slump started, which is really unfortunate. Up until this point I was reading about 3 and a half books a week, which I had been doing all year but school had picked up and I am trying to juggle a school show, classes, a mock exam, my Duke Of Edinburgh award, reading, posting and trying to get some time to myself so I’m kinda drowning in stuff!!
It’s really upsetting that the only thing which either isn’t compulsory or a commitment I’m too far into is reading, so I have had to prioritize and reading has been pushed to the bottom of the pile 🙁 I’m struggling to stay afloat and there just aren’t enough hours in the day to get everything done!! I do make sure I get an hour of reading done each day but I have become a nocturnal creature who just doesn’t  sleep very much! On top of that, the internet in my house keeps dying so I’m finding it difficult to get my posts published, but I will try!
Anyways, the point of this post is just to let you know that things will get back to normal soon and I will stop being so flaky with getting stuff done! My exam is next week and the week after with the school show in the following week. I should be back to normal for the run up to Christmas when I have some really fun Christmas activities planned which I am super excited about!! I hope to finish Dollhouse Asylum by Monday/Tuesday tops but I have a huge amount of script to learn between now and then so no promises!! Please bear with me
